Inro Mounted Small Wadokei or Cased European Pocket Watch

Generic Description:

Period: Late Period from 1820.

Escapement: Crownwheel and Verge with balance wheel.

Power Source: Mainspring.

Construction: Type A (right) – Small Wadokei of similar construction to that used for Makura-dokei. With or without bell striking.

Type B (below) – Bespoke conversions of individual gifts by Europeans of Pocket Watches of English, French and Swiss original manufacture. There was no apparent formal bulk trade of watches for conversion to Japanese Temporal Time. Professor Suzuki of the National Museunm of Science and Nature, Tokyo, stated that he had an Edo Period Watchmakers Toolbox that had several European enamel watch dials loose within it.
